We have several special needs students having lessons with us at present. We teach many different instruments but most successful with special needs have been piano (which we have special books for if students struggle with 'normal' music books) and drums. We teach students who are physicaly disabled (we have a studio which is ground level so wheelchairs are able to get in) and also students with learning disabilities (e.g Dyslexia, Autism, Manic Depression - to name but a few). Although we don't specialise in special needs we do strive to make music accessible to everyone. We don't believe that just because a student has different needs that they should be excluded from music lessons. Music has been proven to benefit students with special needs, when we think of music we don’t often think of it as therapy. But it can be. It can treat things like the ability to take in information and learn, co-ordination and motor skills, the ability to communicate better and also developing the emotions. |
