Biography

Dave was born on New Years morning; his town’s first baby boy of 1986. The second of two children, Dave was raised by his parents Gill and Geoff Brazier in Crawley, West Sussex, England.

At age seven he was encouraged by his mother to learn a musical instrument. He chose the clarinet and to this day he has no idea why. He probably hadn’t even heard one by that point! However, for better or for worse seventeen years later he’s still going and actually rather enjoys it!

Having branched out into various things (saxophone, flute, guitar, drums, singing, autobiographical writing, etc.), Dave’s formal education continued and he passed his Grade 8 Jazz Clarinet exam with 'Honours' in March 2004. He was then awarded the Scudamore Composition Prize in the following September.

His experience increased through regular acoustic performances across the South East with his older sister, Jo, whose brand new album is now available from www.annajo.co.uk. Dave also spent a few years working at Bedrock Musical Exchange; a music shop on Crawley Highstreet. The skills (both specifically musical and more general) and confidence he gained there, and their continued support have carried him a long way.

In 2008, Dave graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in music from Christ Church University in Canterbury (Kent, UK). He learnt a great deal from many people there (both tutors and fellow students) and would like to pay special tribute to his instrumental and vocal tutors David Campbell, Phil Smith, Reneé Salewski and Philip Eve. Later that year he was awarded the Rickards Memorial Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Improvised Music.

These days, Dave is a peripatetic woodwind tutor and performs in a variety of outfits across the South East. Please visit the Instrumental Tuition and Gigs & Events pages for more information.
